Zahra Nazemi
I am a woman from Afghanistan, a girl shaped by a wounded and forsaken land. A single mother, born in 1992. A former journalist who wrote fearlessly in defense of women’s rights. A civil society activist. A government employee at the Ministry of Interior, until everything changed. When the Taliban took control in August 2021, I was forced to flee the country I called home. I came to the United States, a place where doors may still be only half open to immigrant women. But I arrived with the determination to push one open, not just for myself, but for every silenced woman left behind. For me, painting is more than art. It is a cry from the soul. A way to heal unspoken wounds. A language through which I share stories of hope, resistance, and womanhood with the world. Today, as the women of my homeland are denied education and work, they hold on to the one thread they still possess. The thread woven through the small rugs they create, carrying both their pain and their hope. I have promised to be their voice. To walk beside them. To be a light in their darkness and a bridge between pain, art, and possibility.
